Lake Hawea is a sister lake of Lake Wanaka. A few kilometres divide the two picturesque lakes making it an ideal place for the artist to spend some time sketching and painting.
A narrow strip of land separates the two lakes and joined by the road that runs from Wanaka and Haast. As the road leaves the side of Lake Wanaka it rises up to traverse a saddle where a view of Lake Hawea greets you.
The painting is a view from the head of Lake Hawea looking west as the sun rises. In the foreground are Lupins that grow beside the lake in
profusion .
